Wabaunsee County District Records Access

Wabaunsee County Courthouse History

Wabaunsee County's courthouse history is unusually detailed in the official county source. The county was defined in 1855 as Richardson County, attached to Shawnee County for business and judicial purposes, and renamed Wabaunsee in 1859. County records and the safe moved to Alma for the January 1867 Board of Commissioners meeting after county-seat elections in 1866. The Kaufman Building served as a temporary courthouse, with a general store and post office on the first floor and courtroom, church, and social space above.

A native-stone courthouse was completed in 1872 after Alma again won the county-seat contest in 1871. The current courthouse followed a petition from the 13 townships before 1928, with contracts awarded after bids opened January 22, 1931. The building is four stories including sub-basement, 69 by 103 feet, set in a 350 by 355 foot courthouse square. It used Carthage stone outside, native stone backing, 15-inch outside walls, terrazzo floors and steps, marble stairways, marble handrails, and marble corridor walls.

The county accepted the current courthouse on December 10, 1931, and officers moved in by December 14, 1931. The building cost $148,347.57, with furnishings bringing the total close to $165,000. An elevator was installed in 1975, and courthouse parking lots were enlarged and improved in 2001. The District Court is on the 3rd floor today.

Wabaunsee County Court Access

Use 215 Kansas Avenue, Alma, KS 66401 for the courthouse. County transportation is demand-response service rather than a fixed-route bus. The county public transportation office operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and riders schedule through 866-409-7792 or 785-765-2422. The research notes two handicap-accessible vehicles with ramps and four-point wheelchair securement systems. The courthouse has had an elevator since 1975.

Federal Court Is Separate

Federal cases from Kansas are not Wabaunsee County District Court cases. They are handled through the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas and federal systems such as PACER and CM/ECF.
